Materials aeronàutics per les construccions del futur

Una tesi demostra que certs materials aeronàutics s'utilitzaran per evitar patologies en construccions futures

DDG | La investigadora del grup de recerca AMADE (Anàlisi i Materials Avançats per al Disseny Estructural) de la Universitat de Girona, Marta Baena, ha demostrat en la seva tesi, mitjançant diversos assajos experimentals, que el formigó armat amb polímers reforçats amb fibres és una alternativa vàlida i efectiva a l´acer, que pateix corrosió en condicions molt agressives.

En algunes construccions (els dics dels ports, els ponts sobre el mar, els tancs en plantes de reciclatge d´aigua i fins i tot carretes de països on neva molt en les que s´hi aboca sal per a que no es congeli la calçada) fetes amb estructures de formigó armat amb acer que estiguin sotmeses a ambients molt agressius (camps magnètics, humitat o salinitat), el temps sol ser un gran enemic perquè, tard o d´hora, l´acer es degrada i pateix una oxidació que malmet l´obra. Per a que això no passi, l´ús de barres de materials compostos (coneguts com a FRP, Fibre Reinforced Polymer, plàstics reforçats amb fibres) es presenta com una alternativa vàlida i efectiva. No obstant, per a que aquest tipus de material emprat en la indústria aeronàutica (avions i naus espacials) sigui acceptat també en la indústria de la construcció cal que abans s´hagi estudiat convenientment quin és el seu comportament estructural. I això exactament és el que ha fet la investigadora Marta Baena, del grup de recerca AMADE, en la seva tesi doctoral (Study of bond behaviour between FRP reinforcement and concrete).

Adherència

L´adherència, o la capacitat que tingui el FRP per combinar-se amb el formigó, és l´element d´anàlisi clau per aprovar-ne la seva viabilitat. Els dos materials han de poder complir la seva funció sense que es trenqui l´equilibri de forces. Combinats, el formigó ha de resistir la compressió (ha d´evitar comprimir-se) i el reforç, tant d´acer com de FRP, ha de resistir l´atracció (ha d´evitar expandir-se). Com que el reforç de fibra pateix més deformacions que no pas el reforç d´acer, cal redefinir el disseny d´estructures armades amb FRP.

La qualitat d´adherència determina en gran mesura l´aparició de fissures (o esquerdes) que es puguin originar en l´estructura, tant pel que fa al seu número, la separació entre elles i la seva amplada. Amb aquesta finalitat s´han dut a terme dos assajos. El primer experiment, anomenat pull out, consisteix en determinar el comportament adherent dels diferents tipus de barra de FRP que hi ha en el mercat, ja que els acabats són diferents segons el fabricant que les comercialitzi. En un cub de formigó s´hi insereix una barra de fibra i se l´estira d´un sol costat durant cinc minuts fins que es desprèn. La força d´adherència és equivalent a entre 5 i 10 tones (uns 5.000 quilos), segons els resultats dels 88 assajos que s´han realitzat.

El segon experiment triga una hora aproximadament i s´anomena direct tension. En un prisma de formigó de forma rectangular s´hi col·loca una barra de fibra en l´interior i se l´estira pels laterals. Aleshores, es comprova en quin moment apareixen les fissures, amb quina separació i la seva amplada. En un total de 7 assajos, la força d´adherència equival en aquest cas a unes 30 tones. Fins ara, aquests tipus d´experiments només s´havien fet amb l´acer com a protagonista i en comptades ocasions amb FRP. De fet, només s´han publicat cinc estudis d´aquesta temàtica en tot el món.

Model numèric

A més a més, Baena ha elaborat un model numèric de simulació experimental, la bondat del qual s´ha comprovat comparant els seus resultats amb d´altres d´assajos reals, que permet l´estalvi de molts diners, ja que els costos per dur a terme proves d´aquests tipus són força elevats. Aquest model és del tot flexible, és a dir, s´adapta a qualsevol variable i, per tant, és una eina excel·lent per a la realització d´un estudi paramètric del procés de facturació.

Marta Baena va finalitzar els seus estudis d´Enginyeria Industrial a la Universitat de Girona l´any 2006. Durant l´execució del Projecte Final de Carrera, va iniciar la seva carrera investigadora dins del grup de recerca AMADE (Anàlisi i Materials Avançats per al Disseny Estructural). L´any 2007 va obtenir una beca predoctoral per realitzar els cursos del programa de doctorat ´Mecànica de Materials i Estructures´ a la Universitat de Girona. L´any 2008 va obtenir el Diploma d´Estudis Avançats amb el treball de recerca que porta per títol Study of the bond behaviour between concrete and Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rebars with pull-out tests. El mateix any 2008 va obtenir una beca predoctoral de la Generalitat de Catalunya per realitzar la seva tesis doctoral, que va defensar el passat 14 de febrer del 2011. Actualment, Marta Baena complementa la seva activitat investigadora amb l´activitat docent dins del departament d´Enginyeria Mecànica i de la Construcció Industrial de l´Escola Politècnica Superior de la Universitat de Girona.

FIBER REINFORCED POLYMERS

Meeting: 10th International Symposium on “Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Reinforcement for Concrete Structures,” during the ACI Spring 2011 Convention, April 2-4, 2011, Tampa, FL; sponsored by ACI Committee 440, Fiber Reinforced Polymer Reinforcement.

Solicited: Any topic on FRP materials or products used to repair, strengthen, or reinforce concrete and masonry structures. Topics include but are not limited to: global codes and standards; sustainability of FRP reinforced concrete structures; emerging FRP systems; design and performance of FRP reinforced concrete under sustained and fatigue loading; effect of environment on durability; bond of FRP bars, grids, and laminates to concrete; strengthening of concrete structures using FRP systems; field applications and case studies; seismic resistance of concrete structures using FRP materials; effects of extreme events on FRP reinforced structures; and testing of FRP material characteristics.

Requirements: Submit the paper title, a one-sentence description, and author name(s), organization, address, telephone, and e-mail. Titles and descriptions will be reviewed to ensure the material is consistent with the conference. Acceptance of the letter of intent does not constitute acceptance of the paper. Presentations are limited to one per presenter. Presentation of the paper at the conference is contingent on publication of the paper in the proceedings.

Abstract Preparation Guidelines

Contributions on all aspects of composite materials and structures are invited for oral/poster presentations at the conference. A succinct ONE-PAGE abstract (in MS-Word format) that contains enough detail to clearly convey the approach and the results of your research is required.

Language - All abstracts are to be written in English.

Format – Please refer to the ACCM-7 Abstract Template and Abstract Sample to prepare your abstract.

w Must be 300 words or less

w Authors’ names, affiliations and email addresses should be included.

w Abstract that is suitable for publication and give a maximum of 5 keywords

Presentation Type – Preference for ORAL or POSTER presentation should be indicated in your submission.

Best Student Paper Awards

This award is open for 1) graduate students 2) fresh PhD students to encourage their excellence on their research and great contribution to the ACCM-7. The application of the award must be submitted along with the abstract submission and the copy of the student identification is required as well.
